25 Tips to Master LinkedIn

25 Tips to get you on your way to building a revenue generating LinkedIn strategy.

LinkedIn is sometimes treated like the neglected child of social media. Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube get way more attention. But with more than 150+ million users in over 200 countries, LinkedIn is the most popular social network for professionals.

LinkedIn offers a ton of useful tools and features for freelancers, small business owners, and creative professionals, not just those interested in finding a corporate job. Therefore, to help to capitalise and master LinkedIn here's a list of tips that you may have overlooked.

Here's my list of the Top 25 tips that I believe can help you maxmise the benefits of your LinkedIn profile.

LinkedIn Tip to Consider   Actions or details to note
1 Your Headline Information Note that your current job title and your headline are two different things. Your headline is one of the first things that people see. I would suggest you avoid mere job descriptions and be more creative.
2 Optimise your profile
Use keywords within your profile specifically within the headline or summary sections. Also, optimise your profile to be found by your prospective customers. If you have a paid subscription you can see the top keywords used within searches.
3 Customise your Public Profile
You can customise your Public Profile appearance by clicking on settings (dropdown under your name) and within the Profile tab you select Edit your public profile.
4 Photo
Make sure that you have a personal photo on your profile. People want to engage with you, not a company photo or a blank image.
5 Network Updates
Network updates are like the news feed found on Facebook. Review, engage and share with your network to see what they are up to.
6 Recommendations
Have a strategy for recommendations. I personally recommend people that I can comment about positively, have got to know them or have worked with them in the past.
7 Skills & Expertise section
Gives you access to a community matched up with your skillset.  This will give you ideas as to which groups to join and who in your network matches up with those skills.
8 Use Saved Searches
You have a maximum of 3. This is great for building a potential pipeline of prospects, as you can choose to receive weekly or monthly reminders. I suggest you use them all.
9 Use of Applications
You can use applications from LinkedIn to embed into your profile. This is great for advertising details of your services and products that you have to offer. SlideShare Presentation and Box.net files are great applications for your profile.
10 Add video to your profile
You can add video to your profile using the Google Docs application – create a presentation with an embedded video. Review the LinkedIn applications.
11 Leverage LinkedIn Premium Accounts
LinkedIn does have extended premium packages, some of which are specifically targeted at Sales People, Job Seekers and Recruiters, which may prove beneficial for building up that pipeline with your company.
12 Track your industry via LinkedIn Today
Leverage the LinkedIn today feature which sources news from within your industry and your network. The information is sourced from LinkedIn and Twitter.
13 Connect LinkedIn to Twitter
You can share your LinkedIn status updates on Twitter. More Info LinkedIn Twitter Video..
14 Create your CV (Resume) from your LinkedIn Profile
You can create your own CV/Resume directly from your profile using the various templates from the Resume Builder tool.
15 Visualise your LinkedIn Network
You can now visualise your LinkedIn connection to identify communities within your network with LinkedIn InMaps.
16 Add Video to your Company Profile
You can add video directly to your company services. Currently LinkedIn only supports videos that have been uploaded to YouTube. Here’s our video on LinkedIn for Promotional Services.
17 Company Status Updates
You can post Company Status updates to Company followers, similar to Facebook business pages can publish Facebook status updates.
18 Rearrange the look of your profile
LinkedIn enables users to reorder the sections of their profile in any way you prefer. When in edit mode on your profile, simply hover your cursor over the title of each section. Your mouse cursor will turn into a four-arrowed icon, at which point you can click then drag and drop to another position on your profile. This works well in Chrome or Firefox.
19 Leverage LinkedIn Groups
Get involved within your community. Post content, start up a discussion or engage to help out others. Demonstrate your expertise, credibility and build your network.
20 Export connections
You can share your LinkedIn contacts with other applications. Just click on ‘Contacts’, ‘My Connections’, and then scroll down and click ‘Export Connections’. You have the option of exporting as a .CSV file.
21 Leverage LinkedIn Answers
Engage your community with your expertise to demonstrate your credibility and build your network.
22 Leverage LinkedIn RSS feeds

Connect RSS feed outputs from LinkedIn, for example Answers to stay on top of the conversations and general network activity.

23 Leverage LinkedIn Signal

It’s a custom search/filter on your network updates.

24 Leverage Skills & Expertise
To be 100% complete you will need to include at least 5 skill types with a maximum of 50.
25 Claim your vanity URL
